In partnership with Bendigo Community Health Services, WomenCAN Australia identified women who would benefit most from the program. A group of Karen women participated, experiencing life-changing results. Most of these women had been living in Australia for less than a year and had never driven a car before. For some, it took over 50 lessons to feel confident enough to take their driving test.
When asked about the impact of WomenCAN Australia’s support, one participant shared, “I think it’s tremendous because some women don’t have the same opportunities as men. Some women are not as brave as men. The support from WomenCAN Australia boosted our confidence to strive.”
Another participant added, “In the future, if we are applying for jobs or enrolling in study, a driver’s licence is required, and for me, it’s very important.”
WomenCAN Australia Founder and Director Mikaela Stafrace explained, “For a woman, a driver’s licence enables access, independence, and the freedom to make choices. WomenCAN Australia is delighted that our initiative is having such an impact, and we are so grateful to all who helped make it possible.”
The project is supported by the Department of Transport and Planning through their Flexible Local Transport Solution Program. WomenCAN Australia enables this program through the generous support of philanthropic partners, including the Scanlon Foundation, Westpac Foundation, and the Victorian Women’s Trust.
WomenCAN Australia is now extending its support to help women obtain their driver’s licence in Wodonga, Victoria.
