While browsing online, she discovered an ad for WomenCAN Australia, seeking trainees for aged care roles. Though her experience was rooted in working with children, Clarinda decided to embrace the opportunity. “I’m happy I did. Working in aged care is just as rewarding as working with children,” she reflects.
Clarinda’s traineeship took place at Kennington Gardens Retirement Village, where she quickly found her footing. “From the moment I applied to the day I completed the program, the staff were there for me every step of the way,” she shares, emphasising the unwavering support she received. During her time as a trainee, Clarinda discovered that the work extended beyond technical knowledge. “More than the knowledge I was gaining, I tried my best to work with a heart to look after the residents,” she says. The role resonated deeply with her, evoking memories of caring for her own mother back home. She formed meaningful connections with the residents, and when her traineeship ended, she felt sad leaving them behind.
Since completing her traineeship, Clarinda has chosen to take a break from work for about two months to focus on obtaining her driver’s license. “I’ve been driving several hours every day, and I hope to go for my license in a few weeks,” she explains. This decision allows her to prepare for her future while keeping the door open to return to aged care. Clarinda is excited about the prospects that lie ahead, especially since her training with WomenCAN Australia equips her to easily pick up work once she has her license.
Additionally, WomenCAN Australia is expanding its services into transport, including truck and bus roles. This broadens the range of opportunities for individuals like Clarinda and others in the community. With her newfound qualifications, she will be ready to jump back into aged care or explore these new transport opportunities.
