Shontai initially faced skepticism and stereotypical comments about her ability to handle the physically demanding work. However, with the unwavering support from WomenCAN Australia, she advocated for herself and secured the traineeship.
Her determination and hard work soon changed her employer’s perception, proving that she was more than capable of excelling in her role. Shontai explains “I feel like they’ve realised that I’m serious about this, seeing that I’m actually wanting to work, they’re thinking ‘OK, she can actually do the job!’
At Gill Farms, Shontai is the only trainee and one of the few women, working primarily in irrigation and fertigation. Despite the initial challenges, she has found a supportive environment and enjoys the practical, hands-on nature of her training.
Shontai’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and determination, barriers can be overcome. She encourages other women interested in horticulture to pursue their passion, emphasising the importance of standing up for oneself and showing commitment. WomenCAN Australia has been instrumental in her journey, always ready with a plan B and providing the necessary support to help her succeed
When asked about her experience Shontai said “WomenCAN Australia were really helpful, always behind me to support me on what I wanted to do.”
As Shontai continues her two-year traineeship, she looks forward to learning and growing in her role, confident that she has found her true calling in the great outdoors. “I’d definitely recommend it if you’re an outdoorsy person, 110%. I really I love it!”
Congratulations Shontai, you are an inspiration.
