This funding will support nearly 80 women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in Bendigo and Shepparton to gain their probationary driver’s licence—unlocking new pathways to employment, independence, and community participation.
Why Driving Matters
In regional areas, access to transport is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline. For many women, especially those from diverse communities, the lack of a driver’s licence can be a significant barrier to finding and keeping a job, supporting their families, and engaging fully in community life.
Through this program, each participant will receive over 14 paid driving lessons, equipping them with approximately 40 hours of driving experience in varied conditions. This hands-on support is designed to build confidence, competence, and mobility.
A Proven Model of Impact
WomenCAN Australia has previously delivered this program in Maribyrnong, Mildura, and Bendigo, helping 40 CALD women gain their licences. The results speak for themselves: women who overcome transport barriers are better able to access meaningful work, contribute to their communities, and achieve financial independence.

Government Support Driving Local Solutions
This initiative is part of the Victorian Government’s Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program (FLTSP), which partners with local governments and community organisations to deliver small-scale transport projects tailored to local needs. Since 2018, FLTSP has supported more than 200 initiatives across Victoria.
