In June 2023, Estella joined the DJSIR – Driving to Employment Program, seeking assistance to overcome the numerous challenges she faced, including transportation issues, visa restrictions, and the need for identification documents.
Once Estella was offered employment in Benalla, she moved in with a family member, living just 15 minutes from the aged care facility where she worked. However, without a driver’s license, Estella had to rely on taxis or walking to get to work. Recognising her struggles, two participants from the aged care facility, who were also involved with WomenCAN Australia, offered Estella a place to stay until she obtained her license. This generous act allowed her to save on taxi fares and avoid walking home late at night.
Throughout this time, Simone, WomenCAN Australia’s Peer Support Officer, was there to guide Estella every step of the way. Simone assisted Estella with obtaining the necessary identification documents, including a Proof of Age card, to help her become job ready. Simone’s dedication extended beyond regular working hours, such as when she met Estella in a McDonald’s car park at 7 PM to ensure she was prepared for her Working with Children Check application.
Estella began working as a Food Service Attendant at a regional Victorian aged care facility in March 2024. After increasing her hours from part-time to full-time, she gained her probationary license, a milestone made possible by her participation in the Driving to Employment program. With this newfound independence, Estella can now financially support her family in Vanuatu, including her three-year-old daughter.
WomenCAN Australia also connected Estella with Partners in Training, helping her enrol in a Certificate III in Individual Support. Though visa restrictions have delayed her studies, Estella remains hopeful about pursuing nursing in the future.
Reflecting on Estella’s progress, Simone shared, “Supporting Estella over the last 12 months and witnessing her life change in more ways than one has been wonderful. To say I’m proud is an understatement!
