Before starting her traineeship, Sylvia connected with WomenCAN Australia through the Wdea Employment Agency. With the help of WomenCAN Australia, she found employment and began her traineeship in July 2023 and recently graduated.
Throughout her traineeship, Sylvia found immense support from the WomenCAN Australia team. She attended several peer support sessions, which she found incredibly helpful. “WomenCAN Australia have been very supportive and very helpful for getting through my traineeship,” she shared.
One of the most significant aspects of Sylvia’s journey was meeting Nicola, another trainee. From day one, Nicola provided unwavering support, helping Sylvia navigate the challenges of her new role. “Just having someone there that you know is dealing with the same thing… it made a huge difference,” Sylvia explained.
Sylvia’s work at Logan Lodge, part of Swan Hill District Health, is fulfilling and she enjoys the hands-on learning experience. “Caring for the residents is what I love most about the role,” she said.
Her employer was supportive throughout her traineeship, allowing her time to study when needed. Sylvia appreciated this flexibility, which helped her balance work and study.
When asked what advice she would give to other women considering contacting WomenCAN Australia or re-entering the workforce, Sylvia’s message was clear: “Just do it. You have nothing to lose. They have the support out there.”
Looking ahead, Sylvia plans to continue her education by pursuing a Diploma of Nursing. This next step in their journey is exciting and promising.
Having recently graduated, Sylvia reflects on the support she received from WomenCAN Australia and her peers. “Just the feeling of not being alone… there are people out there who will take the time to help you,” she said.
Sylvia’s story is a testament to the power of support and the impact of following one’s passion. With her traineeship complete and plans for further education, Sylvia is well on her way to making a lasting difference in the lives of the elderly.
