From Stuck to Steady – How Support Removed Barriers

For more than ten years, Emily held a learner’s licence that never quite turned into freedom.

Public transport shaped her days. Getting to work, appointments or even into town required careful planning, long travel times and a lot of waiting.

Confidence was low, and opportunities felt harder to reach. Emily spent much of her time at home, caring for the house and animals — not because she lacked ambition, but because transport was a barrier that kept getting in the way.

That changed when Emily connected with WomenCAN Australia’s Driving to Employment (DTE) Program.

Removing Barriers, One Step at a Time

Emily entered the program with a clear goal — to finally gain her licence — but also with uncertainty.

“Confidence was the biggest barrier,” Emily says. “Driving with family was okay, but they’re not trained instructors. I had so many doubts and questions.”

Through the DTE Program, Emily was matched with a driving instructor who understood adult learners and the importance of going at the right pace. Lessons weren’t just about ticking hours off a logbook — they were about understanding, reassurance and feeling supported.

When certain road rules felt confusing, they were explained patiently and visually until everything made sense.

“She even drew it out so I could understand it better. That made a huge difference.”

WomenCAN Australia also provided practical support behind the scenes, helping organise lessons and check‑ins, and creating a safe, welcoming space where Emily felt comfortable asking questions and being honest about her challenges.

“You’re not judged. It doesn’t matter what you tell them — you feel welcome and safe.”

Building Confidence Changes Everything

After more than a decade as a learner, Emily passed her test and gained her licence — a milestone she describes as life‑changing.

“I’m not embarrassed it took longer than most people. I did it. I earned it.”

With her licence, everyday life became simpler. Emily no longer spent up to three hours a day commuting by bus just for work. Appointments stopped taking half a day. Planning became easier, and independence followed.

“I don’t have to wait for the bus anymore. I can go from A to B — no extra time, no stress.”

That newfound confidence flowed into other areas of her life too.

Making Connections That Open Doors

Shortly after gaining her licence, Emily secured a full‑time traineeship with the City of Greater Bendigo. She commenced in April 2026 and is undertaking a Traineeship completing a Certificate IV in Business, while rotating across multiple departments — an opportunity closely aligned with her long‑term career goals.

“In about two weeks, I went from not having a job and not having my licence, to having both. I feel like I’m speed‑running adulthood.”

Being able to drive has helped Emily settle into full‑time work, improve her sleep routine, and manage life with greater balance and certainty.

“I’m still processing how quickly everything changed — but in a good way.”

Someone in Her Corner

For Emily, the most powerful part of the experience wasn’t just learning to drive — it was knowing she wasn’t doing it alone.

“Knowing there’s support out there specifically for women in situations like mine is really inspiring.”

Emily’s story is a reminder that barriers like transport, confidence and access don’t reflect a lack of ability. With the right connections and practical support, those barriers can be removed — opening the way to independence, opportunity and meaningful work.

At WomenCAN Australia, we’re proud to stand alongside women like Emily as they build confidence, overcome challenges and take their next steps forward.
