Poppy’s Journey: Driving Toward Independence and New Beginnings

At 30, Poppy came to WomenCAN Australia with a clear and powerful goal: to get her driver’s licence.

As a dedicated mum balancing part-time work and raising her toddler, she had held her learner’s permit for some time – but the daily juggle left little room to focus on progressing toward her licence. Determined to make a change, Poppy self-referred to our Driving to Employment program in regional Victoria, seeking the support she needed to gain the independence that comes with being behind the wheel.

What makes Poppy’s story inspiring is her resilience. Alongside her driving goal, she has been navigating a deeply personal journey – pursuing IVF in the hope of expanding her family. Despite the challenges, she has never lost sight of the future she’s working hard to create for herself and her child.

Recently, Poppy shared that she walked over an hour to take her child to swimming lessons – a reminder of her commitment and strength. With encouragement from her peer support worker, who reminded her just how far she’d come, Poppy kept going. Her goal was in sight.

And now, we’re delighted to share that Poppy has officially passed her driving test!

Her son’s joyful response says it all:
“Yayy Mummy, now you get to drive – and my other mummy gets to walk!”

Adding to this special milestone, Poppy’s mum – who lives in Melbourne – has been working to get a car roadworthy. Soon, Poppy won’t just have her licence – she’ll have her own car, ready to embrace this next chapter with confidence and freedom.

These are the stories that remind us why we do what we do. At WomenCAN Australia, we’re proud to walk alongside women as they pursue practical, life-changing goals.

Congratulations, Poppy. Your courage and determination are nothing short of inspiring.
