Diane is Thriving in Aged Care

“It just, how can I put it, it’s brought my self-confidence back.  I now feel like part

of society again.”

Up until 2023, Diane was a primary carer for her Father and Mother.

“When I was caring for my Father and Mother, I sort of, lost myself”.  Diane explained.  “And when my Mother got put into care, I’m thinking, what am I going to do?  I’m like, I’m not a spring chicken!  You know, and it was all a bit daunting.”

At this time, Diane saw an WomenCAN Australia advertisement come up on Facebook and thought “I’ll fill my details in and just see what happens.  And then they rang me up and explained to me all about it.”

After meeting with the Peer Support team and completing her induction, Diane commenced her traineeship through WomenCAN Australia in August 2023.  She is now well on her way to completing her Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care) with Bupa in Woodend.

“They’re brilliant at Bupa, Woodend, so helpful”, explained Diane.

“And the support I’ve got from WomenCAN, I could ring Trish up and have a chat.  Because of me getting this job, and I know if anything happens, I can ring them up and they can help me through it, or give me support, or whatever.”

“Yeah, I just think WomenCAN Australia is a brilliant organisation, I really do. Particularly for women like myself, who have dropped out of the workforce for quite a few years and are trying to bet back in, it’s like, ‘Where do I start?’  Like, ‘Why does someone want to employer me when they could go get a 20 year old?’  You know what I mean.”

“Because when you’ve been out of work for a while or you’ve looked after your family or kids or like my parents, you sort of, like I say, you lose yourself.”

“But now thanks to WomenCAN Australia and Bupa, it’s like I’ve found myself again, it’s like I’ve got me back.”

Diane’s resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to many others who face similar challenges. We celebrate her journey and the positive impact she’s making in the lives of others.
