For fourteen years, Simone (right) worked as an Integration Aide at her local primary school. She loved supporting children, but eventually felt ready for a new challenge, something that would allow her to grow in a different way.
“I needed a change,” she said. “Aged care sounded really interesting, and I thought… maybe I could give this a go.”
A spontaneous application on Seek set everything in motion. Days later, she received a call introducing her to WomenCAN Australia, a moment she now describes as the turning point.
“When I walked into WomenCAN’s Australia’s office for the first time, everyone was so friendly and open. Any question I had, they answered. They were just really supportive of the whole journey.”
Learning again with support at every step
Returning to study after many years felt daunting, but Simone quickly found her rhythm. “The course was structured so well,” she said. “By the end, I felt like a different person. I’d accomplished something I didn’t think I could.”
The ‘earn and learn’ model made the traineeship possible for her, offering financial stability while she trained. WomenCAN Australia’s Placement Circle also became a crucial source of encouragement.
“You’re all going through it together,” she said. “The team was always there to steady you, and meeting other women on the same path was really lovely.”
A welcoming team at Bupa
Simone completed her placement at Bupa, where she now works as a Personal Care Assistant, predominantly in dementia care. She immediately felt supported, both by WomenCAN Australia trainees already on site and by the broader Bupa team.
“The whole team has been fantastic and supportive,” she said. “It made the transition so much easier.”
The privilege of caring
Today, Simone speaks with pride about the people she supports. “I think it’s an honour, working with people who are vulnerable, sharing laughs, helping them through their day.”
She admits the days can be long, but they are meaningful. “Suddenly it’s 3:00 and you think, ‘Hang on, what just happened?’ You’re helping people, you’re laughing… the time just goes.”
A qualification and a future full of possibilities
Completing her Certificate in Individual Support -Aged Care was a milestone Simone will never forget. “At the end of it, I’m fully qualified, I’m trained, and a lot of doors have opened.”
Looking back, the biggest shift has been in her confidence. “I’m a lot more confident now. Knowing I can do this… that’s been huge.”
Her message to other women considering the same step is simple: “If you’re thinking about it — do it. You might surprise yourself.”
